“The publications of literary works” not only break down the restrictions on reading of written texts being circulated among a few people, but also expand the context for literary transmission, and enhance the possibility of literary dialogue. It has a considerable effect on the development of literature. Through publications, including design changes in external forms such as editing, printing, and binding, as well as the operational vision, publication mission, practice and operations of marketing strategies, all helps to promote reading. The atmosphere of reading is also an important indicator of national culture and artistic literacy.
During the period of Japanese rule, Taiwan introduced “movable type” technology, and the publication of books entered the “age of mechanical reproduction.” In the 1990s, computer layout replaced movable type, then the 21st century unveiled a new era of “digital publishing” and “e-books.” Publication of literary books is variable, multifaceted, rich, and colorful; it has always played an important motivating role in the development of Taiwan literature.
Thus, the NMTL has planned this special exhibition, which demonstrates the historical trajectory of the publications of Taiwan literature from 1910s under Japanese rule to the present time, to display innovative, classic, and influential literary works.
