What is war? Other than gallantry and bloodshed on battlefields, as well as tactics, weapons, money and lists of the wounded and dead, what else is there in a war? What about the life experiences of those who aren’t at the frontline but still suffer? What about the memory of the wartime civilians and the voices of those struggling to survive amidst the rumbling roars of war?
Perhaps we need women’s perspectives, narratives and stories to lead us to discover some alternative truths of war.
While they were each in a far-away place, Anne and Ama resonated with one another because of the Second World War. The linkage between them allows us to gaze at people’s quiet resistance against war through women’s perspectives, and to feel their feisty struggles for life. Going back into a time when everyone had to make the necessary choices to survive, we can however find a dream of peace which is not only borne by Anne and Ama, but us.
